Apres ski after a day on the slopes

Après-ski or “after ski” describes the popular post-ski activities from vin chaude (hot wine)  to craft beers around the hot tub, there’s no official timeframe for “après ski,” but it usually starts in the late afternoon after the final run of the day. Châtel isn’t know for wild nights but the village is home to some lovely bars and restaurants to unwind. Wander down to the village to L’avalanche bar (only 7 mins walk from Chalet la Fontaine) or try one of the other bars and restaurants nearby.

There’s an awesome zip line

A spectacular way to see the Portes du Soleil.

The snow cannon system means there’s always snow

The Portes du Soleil has invested heavily in snow cannons so there is always great skiing. There are around 237 snow cannons over 21 pistes covering 75 hectares. This guarantees skiing from mid December until the end of April. The snowmaking facilities use only water and cold air: no chemicals are used. The snow cannon works by firing water from a nearby reservoir into the air which turns into snow when it hits the cold air.

It’s a beautiful traditional French alpine village

Châtel has been carefully developed and still retains its old farming town traditions. You can buy local goods such as Abondance cheese and other local produce. Since the first drag-lift was built from the village up to Lac du Vonnes, Châtel’s agriculture and tourism have steadily developed to create a charming resort in the Alps.

Value for money skiing holidays

Skiing holidays in the Alps are never cheap but when you compare Châtel to more well-known resorts such as Morzine, Val d’Isere, Courcheval and Meribel, you’ll find accommodation prices are a lot more reasonable. Chalet la Fontaine varies from £395 – 795pp.
